Listing for:
Near-mint-condition Columbia "Favorite" with desirable volume control doors

This Columbia has a massive, very impressive cabinet in superb original condition. The mahogany has excellent figuring and has seen very kind care for the past 95 years. The lid is gorgeous, with no water rings, scratches veneer damage at all.

Here is the phonograph ready to play. The turntable felt, reproducer, fittings, etc. are all absolutely original. This phonograph is truly a relic. All we have done is lubricate the motor and it's ready to go for another century.

Here are the tone control doors (not louvers!) that open up to reveal a real wood horn! That shows how the Columbia company considered this a premium model back in 1911... otherwise it would have gotten some cast iron or painted sheet metal horn.

The unique Columbia decal and the excellent dealer label -- this machine was sold out of Los Angeles, California from the Southern California Music Company. Very hard to find this sort of condition these days. For a totally original machine, this one is a 9.9/10.

The Columbia company, makers of disc and cylinder graphophones for many years, entered the internal-horn phonograph market in 1908 with a line of "Grafonolas" to compete with the Victor Company's "Victrolas". The strategy was similar Victor's: to offer a complete range of machines for any budget, and to competitively price the product such that the purchase of a talking machine would lead to continued sales of the real moneymakers: the 78 rpm records! In 1911, Columbia introduced this machine, known in the catalog as the "Favorite". Original sales price was $50, making this the most expensive, and largest of the table-top models, apart from the ultra-high luxury model. Columbia took a few too many cues from their rival Victrolas, since the tone-control doors over the horn were covered by a patent held by the Victor Talking Machine! Therefore, this feature was removed within a number of months under a threat of lawsuits, leaving all subsequent Columbia "Favorite"s with the familiar Columbia tone control louvers. Why all this history? Because this is a rare and desirable model of an otherwise common phonograph, making this machine, due to its scarcity and unusually clean original condition a museum quality piece. Could be yours, for a bargain price. Comes complete with a large supply of needles and an album of period records.
